There’s something magical about a fresh batch of playdough and the way it smells, squishes between fingers, and transforms into whatever a child imagines—from snakes and cookies to animals and pretend pizzas. You can make it in less than 5 minutes for under $2 and have it last for months!

Growing Up With Playdough
Growing up, my momma gave me store-bought dough. Then, one day, at a friend’s house, her momma let us make playdough in our old saucepan, adding food coloring with a wooden spoon while we sat on the kitchen floor anxiously waiting.
Today’s New Tradition
If your littles love to help you cook, this is a great project for them. They can mix the ingredients together in a bowl. The different textures they experience during the making process engage their senses (touch, sight, sound, and smell) through various activities and materials to stimulate their development and learning.
Now, with grandbabies of my own, I’ve passed that little tradition on. It’s a quick and inexpensive activity that keeps little hands busy and sparks creativity without screen time. Whether you’re making this for your children, grandkids, homeschool activities, or just looking for something fun to do on a rainy afternoon, homemade play dough is a classic that never goes out of style. It is so soft and squishy and cuts perfectly with a cookie cutter.

- 2 cups lukewarm water
- 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil
- Optional Food coloring (I like Amazon food coloring) recommended
- Optional Essential Oils for scents (I like Doterra)
- Quart-sized bags or an airtight container
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, stir together the flour, salt, and cream of tartar.
- Add water and oil. Stir until smooth.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. It will start to thicken after a couple of minutes.
- When the dough pulls away from the sides and forms a ball, remove from the heat.
- Place the dough inside a gallon-sized bag or onto wax paper.
- Let it cool for a few minutes, and then knead until smooth.
- Divide the dough into balls (for as many colors as you want) and then add the dough into the quart-sized bags. Start with about 5 drops of color and add more to brighten it. If you are adding scents or glitter, do it at this step
- Knead the dough while inside the bag so it doesn’t stain your hands. Once it’s all mixed together, you’re ready to PLAY.
Storage Tips
- Your playdough is best stored in an airtight container or zip-lock bags. It will last for about 2-3 months if properly sealed,
- If the dough starts to dry out a little, add a dab of water and knead it back to life.
- You can also keep it in the refrigerator (but not necessary) for extra longevity, especially in warmer climates.
